Ceramic figurines depict a scene similar to Manet’s Olympia. A prostitute lies upon a bed with her gaze set directly on the viewer. A maid is bringing her a bouquet of flower sent by one of her gentleman callers. A black cat lies at her feat. The painting was meant to be provocative, bringing to forefront the blatant immoral lifestyle of society’s upper classes through the use of what Roland Barthes referred to as myth. Careful placement of signifiers within the painting convey a message within the painting the viewer is meant to understand completely.
Entire set includes tea pot, cream carafe, sugar pot, 6 tea cups, 6 spoons, and 6 saucers.
